So You Want To Work in Television was set up by TV producer Shu Richmond to share advice and information on getting into the television industry. It includes stories from industry professionals in a variety of roles in broadcasting, personal stories of things that don’t always go right and practical advice on everything from creating a CV, presenting on TV, finding an agent and developing ideas. Shu is no longer providing new content but you are welcome to offer articles and blog posts for the site via the contact page.

A multi award-winning senior producer Shu has over 25 years experience of developing, producing, commissioning and managing live and pre-recorded factual entertainment, daytime, consumer and lifestyle programmes. Awarded a National Television Award and two TV Quick awards in successive years for Best Daytime Show as Editor and Executive Producer of ITV’s ‘This Morning’.
Specialising in the conception and production of innovative programming Shu set up the award-nominated ‘The Villa’ for Sky One (the format sold worldwide), sold a travel series to Channel 5, conceived the unique format of ‘Have I Been Here Before’, a regression series for ITV1, and developed and launched a new live daytime series, ‘Angela and Friends’ for Sky One. Shu also conceived and produced a whole host of ideas within the format of ‘This Morning’ from health & beauty strands to features on obesity, sexual abuse and the homeless.
As an Executive Producer for ITV Daytime and Lifestyle, Shu successfully managed all aspects of television production, including compliance, commercial projects, PRTS (Premium Rate Telephone Services) for lucrative competitions and secondary rights development. Shu edited a series of self-help books with publisher Hodder Education, pitched & produced a DVD to be sold with OK! magazine, ran a nationwide competition event to design a boardgame with Hasbro, launched two large-scale charity appeals and developed content ideas with a range of commercial businesses – and more!
Shu has worked with many television presenters, experts and personalities, including Fern Britton, Phillip Schofield, Lorraine Kelly, Alan Titmarsh, Dr Christian Jessen, Angela Griffin, money-making expert Martin Lewis, Eamonn Holmes, Ruth Langsford, John Leslie and many more.
As a consultant Siubhan has run a number of workshops and seminars on subjects ranging from developing content for TV, pitching to broadcasters, finding work as a presenter or expert on TV and the practicalities of producing media.
